Legislation Action Items August – September 2017:
Prepared by Advocacy & Management Group (AMG)
The Legislature has been recessed since July when it passed the state budget and resolved issues related to the brief state government shut down in early July. The Legislature is not expected to meet again until after the November election. This year, all forty Senate seats and all eighty Assembly seats are up for election along with the governor’s office. Governor Chris Christie is term-limited and unable to run again for governor this year. Former United States Ambassador to Germany and retired Goldman Sachs executive Phil Murphy, a Democrat, is the heavy favorite to win. Lieutenant Governor Kim Guadagno is the Republican nominee for governor. In July, both candidates picked lieutenant governor candidates. Ambassador Murphy chose Essex County Assemblywoman Sheila Oliver, a former Assembly Speaker, as his running mate. Lt. Governor Guadagno chose Woodcliff Lake Mayor Carlos Rendo as her running mate. Following the November election the Legislature will return to hold committee hearings and voting sessions to finish its business before the end of the legislative term on January 8, 2018. Any bills that have not been passed by the Legislature will have to be re-introduced and begin the legislative process again on January 9th.
